Blogging Pet Peeves | Pods, Followers and More

October 8, 2017

Hey my lovelies so i don’t even know how this post is going to turn out or if it will even make any sense at all. So for the past few months i’ve had a few bug bares with blogging and the community, now don’t get me wrong i LOVE blogging always have and hopefully always will. However there are a few things that have always got my back up or things that have happened and i just wanted to share with you all in hopes that i’m not alone.

I’ve gotten to that point in life where i’m done with drama and done with following the crowd and i finally feel like i’m coming into my own and the same goes for my blog. Since starting a year ago i’m now at a point where i know what type of blogger and am and what i want to continue to be. Blah, blah, blah aside here’s my thoughts…

Following Back

So something that i’m now coming to realise is that i don’t want to follow someone on social media just because they followed me. I’ve always followed people back to be polite but now my social media is full of people who don’t fit my interest or blogging niche. Now i hope that doesn’t sound mean because it wasn’t meant to, but i feel like i’m missing posts and content from bloggers/people i have a genuine interest in because i’ve followed so many people.

So my fix has been having a massive clear out of followers, a lot of which have been ghost followers or inactive for a while, but also tailoring my following so i can get the most out of it and see that content i enjoy. Going forward i don’t want to feel guilty for not following someone back just because they follow me.

Comment Pods

Okay again i feel like i need a disclaimer here, i get comment pods and i get what their aim is but i just think that sometimes it can be false. We are all trying to get a bigger audience for our blogs and we all want more engagement but personally i don’t always think pods are the right way. Luckily i’m in 2 pods that are full of some wonderful bloggers who’s content i genuinely enjoy. I recently left a handful of pods because i didn’t enjoy some of the creators content and i felt like i was giving a false comment just so i could get a comment back on my post. The same goes for bloggers comment on my posts, for example i had someone comment on my post saying they also loved ‘said’ product in a review i wrote too but the thing is i said i hated the product in my review so they blatantly didn’t read the post. There is where my problem lies, if i see a post i like then i’ll comment and interact but i don’t want to feel pressured to comment on something i didn’t like or didn’t relate to me.

The Follow to Unfollow Game / Paid Followers

People who follow me, to then unfollow me when i follow them back I SEE YOU. I have a followers app where i check my social media stats daily and it notifies me on people who do this and it happens daily. It’s not an honest way to gain a following and it’s damn right annoying. The same goes for paid followers/bot follower account. I’m always so sceptical of accounts that have a 10k following when they themselves only follow 100 (unless they are celebs or actual verified accounts), it’s so see through.

Automated DM’s

Just don’t. It’s pushy and it’s aggravating, sending me an automated dm when i follow you will make me unfollow you. Sorry…

Spam Comments

I know there’s nothing i can really do to stop them but GOD they are so annoying aren’t they? This is mainly on Instagram for example i’ll post a photo of makeup and there will be a spam comment saying ‘love your outfit’ … umm? Now i know there are so many bot account out there but more and more i’m seeing actual bloggers use bots. All i can ask is why?

Okay i think i’m all vented out. I hope this isn’t too much of a debbie downer post but i really wanted to share my thoughts. As mentioned i do love blogging but it’s not always cupcakes and rainbows. Hope you enjoyed it! Let me know in the comments if you’ve had any blogging pet peeves recently.

I don’t think comment/like pods are that bad, especially with the struggle of trying to grow on Instagram, but like you said being part of one can be fun it’s not always false – just a nice boost 🙂 I’m definitely not keep on automated DM’s, they’re so impersonal!

Like I said I get them, I’m in a couple and they are great! I just don’t believe in commenting on something I don’t like just for the sake of getting a comment back! X

I agree with so much of this. I often have a moral dilemma RE: pods but I think its a good idea to only stick in ones where you enjoy the other bloggers’ content! I think its awful when you’re in a pod, leave a thoughtful comment and get “thanks for sharing” in return lol. Automated DMs are just dreadful, I can’t believe some bloggers still use them!

Good venting post, I’m sure you’ll have lots of people who agree with you here!

I love this so much! Blogging definitely isn’t sunshine 24/7 and there are elements that are annoying, and you’ve listed some really great points! I can’t deal with the whole bots thing either, paying for followers/ engagement seems silly. I’m sure a lot of people will relate to this!xx

Very honest post! I also when I first started blogging used to follow back to be polite and am left in the exact same boat as you.. I want to have a clear out but at the same time feel bad!!
So many of the things you listed in this are my pet hates too, the follow/unfollow game kills me! Why do it??? Lol

I totally agree with you on the following thing, I only follow people whose content I truly enjoy. Those follow for a follow people really get on my nerves, I have had the same girl comment f4f? on a lot of my insta post’s and I actually followed her for awhile and she never followed back, so I just recently blocked her.

I share your hatred in all of these! Do people really not have anything better to do than to follow and unfollow a dozen times a day? Get a hobby 🤣 I’ve only recently joined comment pods as I’ve always been a bit on the fence about them. I will admit that some people in the pods I’m in clearly don’t read the posts and write super generic comments (which is exactly what you don’t want, right?!) but there are some amazing bloggers in them too xxx

Love this post so much!! I’ve only just started realising not to follow certain people back because I find myself looking at posts that I genuinely wouldn’t be interested in xx

I agree with some of these, I don’t follow if I’m not interested. I realise that means they might unfollow me at a later date but I want my feed to be relevant so I can interact with more people.

I feel you on this! I’ve been having a clear out of who I follow on social media, as I wanted my feeds back to being a place for inspiration and seeing the blogs I really wanted to read.
So many people follow just for a return follow, but I’d rather have a genuine follower than someone wanting to up their numbers! Will never understand the paid followers thing!
I’ve ended up in some pods and I feel bad for leaving, but I can’t write an irrelevant comment on something that just hasn’t interested me.

Nothing worse than when someone leaves a comment without having actually read your post. Drives me mad. I also, like you can’t stand spammy messages and people who expect like for like or follow for follow. If you don’t want to follow me for my content then just don’t follow in the first place right?! xx

Totally understand the following people back thing. I’ve recently stopped automatically following everyone back, only people I’m interested in following. For instance I’ve got a load of purely beauty/fashion bloggers on my twitter and it’s just not something that interests me (sorry). Some of the blogs I still enjoy reading anyway because they’re funny or particularly well written, and some of the bloggers are really nice people. But I don’t want to be following a thousand beauty bloggers when it’s just not my interest. Same with Insta – flatlays of makeup all look the same to me (sorry again). I understand the passion and love that goes into it, and I feel kinda bad for not liking it 🙁
I love your blog though, it’s interesting and varied and I’m into that 🙂

You can’t follow everyone, I do hate it though when people unfollow after following you.I don’t unfollow them though if I have a genuine interest in their blog but it does make me aware that they aren’t actually interested in connecting with new people at all. I have shifted my blog recently so it is stating up again and new to comment pods so hopefully wont have any negative experiences :s To be honest all I have sen recently is people saying how awful the blogging world is which makes me a bit worried about networking.

    Jen xx
